Today, the Gender and Identity Factors Platform (GIFP) features “Female Veterans and Right-Wing Extremism: Becoming ‘One of the Boys.’”

Written as a reflection on the first anniversary of the January 6 riots at the US Capitol, this piece argues that the process of integrating into a hypermasculine military environment can create pathways of cultural and organizational familiarity for female veterans, especially those with combatant experience, to right-wing extremist environments. It concludes with a discussion and recommendations for preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE) measures aimed at current and former service members.

The article highlights that understanding the radicalization journey of female veterans, as well as the roles they take up in right-wing extremist movements, could improve P/CVE efforts. It emphasizes the need for more research on the pathways taken by some female service members to enhance the gendered aspects of military P/CVE programming. Such efforts should account for the ways women and men experience military service differently.
