“Resource Spotlight Monday”: Today, the Gender and Identity Factors Platform (GIFP) features: “Shared Spaces: Gender and Religion in Nigeria’s Programme for Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration”.
A part of a collection of essays published by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, this essay discusses the importance of engaging women on religion-based platforms in counter-terrorism and preventing/countering violent extremism (CT/PCVE). It argues that terrorists use gendered ideologies to justify violence, highlighting the crucial roles of Muslim women’s associations, teachers, civil society leaders, psychologists, and female religious scholars in north-eastern Nigeria. The essay details how women have been engaged in interfaith dialogue, counter-narratives, and reintegration efforts in response to Boko Haram, and offers recommendations for tailored policies that address the specific needs and experiences of those formerly associated with the group.
