“Resource Spotlight Monday”: Today, the Gender and Identity Factors Platform (GIFP) features: “The Role of Women in the Conflict in Cabo Delgado: Understanding Vicious Cycles of Violence.”

This briefing paper explores the various roles undertaken by women in armed conflict in the Cabo Delgado Province in Mozambique, as well as terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism. The paper provides an overview of the ways in which women have contributed to, as well as prevented armed conflict throughout Mozambique’s history. In this regard, the paper emphasises that women across the province have not only been the recurrent target of armed conflict, but they have also pursued in active roles in armed conflict as observers, vigilantes, and even as soldiers. As a part of this analysis, the paper explores how contexts of terrorism have particularly deployed gender to recruit and sustain the interest of women. The paper concludes by providing a series of recommendations, including the social and professional integration of women as a means of countering terrorism and preventing/countering violent extremism (CT/PCVE).
